To be honest with you i have debated putting up this category because building with real logs may not be a very good idea nowadays unless you are building a "lodge" or some other big public building and require that type of structure offering a certain atmosphere . . .
Also Visit My Other Websites Select From Box Below
According to one website i visited the problem with genuine log building is the ongoing maintenance required over the years and it is costly. The logs are very unstable and shrink and expand with changing atmospheric conditions plus other problems. I have never built or lived in a log home but feel nevertheless that it would be a good idea for anyone considering this type of structure to do a thorough research job before committing their resources to a log home or cabin building project. There are so many better alternatives available that building with logs would be last on my list. Building with "log siding" would probably be a better way to go to achieve the look of a log cabin but with the lower maintenance of modern building techniques and materials.
Just so you'll know . . . This website is advertising driven. Advertising income pays the bills like hosting fees and other expenses. I am adding another quality advertising source which i like a lot - Amazon.com. If you the viewer of this website would consider making purchases of the items that interest you from my 'Amazon Ad Placements' that would be very helpful and appreciated. When you make purchases through these Amazon links, I receive a very modest sales commission on any purchase you make, but it doesn't cost you a penny. The prices are exactly the same as buying on Amazon directly, and there is no extra charge to you; Amazon pays the commission fees.
Everyone is welcome to visit my websites as much as they want even if you do not buy anything. And for your listening enjoyment, please help yourself to the free mp3 music located at the bottom of the website. All my websites will now be required to have a "Theme Song", to enhance their cultural value (LOL).
Also, very important thing to do . . . Please do not give a deposit or cash payment to any of these businesses listed here without first doing your research on them and establishing some sort of assurance that they are going to fulfill their end of the deal. I have not, nor can i screen these listings here - they are here for your use as a starting point in your search for a home for yourself. Some of them may be out of business, in bankruptcy, or having financial difficulty, or God only knows what kind of problems they could be having. TROPHY AMISH CABINS Here's a good one for you. For those of you desiring a 'Portable Log Cabin' this is it. This company specializes in small portable log cabins ready to use after delivery to your property (nationwide turn key delivery).
“Trophy Amish Cabins, LLC is a small family operated business, located in South Lyon, MI. Display models located in Jonesville, MI 49250. We enjoy visiting our 46 acre recreational property because we are able to appreciate many outdoor activities. At first we would set up and sleep in a tent, then pack it up to leave, it was a hassle. The closest hotel was 10 miles away, and took time away from our outdoor camping experience, not to mention the added expense. We soon decided that our weekend 'Get A Way' visits would be more enjoyable with a small place to stay. We looked at used pop ups, campers, trailers, and motor homes. They were all designed and built extra light duty for fuel efficient transportation, short ceilings, and required constant maintenance. We decided on building a small week end Cabin. I drew up the detailed plans and soon realized we just didn't have the time to build it, and decided to purchase a cabin instead. We had heard of some Amish built Log Cabins that were delivered. We visited many builders, inspected their cabins and found ourselves very disappointed. They were nice looking from a distance, but very cheaply built, 4" X 4" treated runners, 5/8" plywood floors, 2" X 4" stud walls and rafters, metal braces, 7/16" particle board roof sheathing, three slat fiberglass shingles, exterior Pine log siding. Hardly a Cabin, more like a fancy shed. Since we would have to finish the interior we might as well insulate and wire it, not to mention the ceiling, wall and floor covering material. Drywall was not an option; at $10 SF, Solid Pine trim was too expensive and labor intensive.
Then again we would have to do all the work, locate, pick up materials, transport a generator, fuel, tools, cut and fit every piece on site, supply food, refreshments, and not to mention everyone says they will help, until you call and they have something planned that weekend. Lets not forget fuel, it's expensive to drive to and from your property and all over, picking up materials, last minute runs to the local hardware store, if there's one close by, and hopefully it's also open late and on weekends. We decided we wanted a real log cabin; it wouldn't depreciate like a camper and would last a lifetime, a long term investment. Should we decide to sell the property, the cabin would be seen as an asset, besides my wife and daughters are kind of high maintenance; if the cabin wasn't nice, they wouldn't stay in it. We traveled all over Ohio,Indiana, Pennsylvania,West Virginia, Kentucky and New York, to mention just a few states . . . We met many Amish and Mennonite builders, toured their facilities; most only built the shed type cabins or wouldn't travel more than 50 miles to a work-site. Eventually we came across a small family run Amish shop in Ohio. After meeting and speaking to the owner and touring his shop, we ordered our Cabin on the spot! Since our cabin would be custom built we decided to design it to suit our specific needs. To keep the bugs away and avoid tracking mud and snow inside our beautiful cabin, we incorporated an enclosed screened in porch to the design layout. We added more windows, located to maximize the view of the ridge and ponds, and also to provide a cool summer breeze. Lastly we had a custom solid Pine bunk bed with a built in bench on the end and stools built to compliment the decor of the cabin. The Cabin was perfect! It had taken years to finally see our dream cabin come to fruition; we felt that everyone should have the opportunity to own their own high quality custom dream cabin. That's we decided to hire an architect and developed our own detailed build specifications and partnered with the Amish shop owner. Jim Gega, Founder and President of Trophy Amish Cabins, LLC has spent 30 years in varied manufacturing industries and environments. Constant improvement, high quality materials, craftsmanship and exceptional customer service is what sets us apart from the rest. All Trophy Amish Cabins are custom built in a small Authentic Genuine Amish shop, generator and phone shared at the easement, no radio, TV, internet, cameras, fax machine, or unnecessary distractions. Genuine Old fashioned high quality craftsmanship, at an affordable price. Our goal is to meet or exceed your expectations! That is our promise to you! Grown & Built in the USA.”

ADVENTURE LOG CABINS This log cabin business has a good selection of cabins under 1000 SF. It is always confusing to me with these businesses that have different 'lines' of product with websites featuring their sub-lines or whatever they are called. I think this is a product line of 'Jim Barna Log and Timber Homes' a business headquartered in Tennessee. Picture on the right is of their 'Bearhat Mountain' Model, 448 SF, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath
Log Cabin.
“An inheritance of appreciation for the beauty of Nature has been passed down through the generations of the Jim Barna family—and for decades in the Jim Barna Log and Timber Homes company. Our passion for the outdoor way of life is our family tradition. It is only natural that our corporate headquarters is nestled just outside of The Big South Fork National Park. We have built upon the pioneering spirit of America's past to bring you the best log home available today, and one that will last through generations of your family. Jim Barna Log and Timber Homes is one of the largest and most innovative log home manufacturers in the United States. Our founder and namesake did much to shape the landscape of the current log home market. Founder Jim Barna began changing the industry by changing the logs. He started the trend of milling the logs to specific, uniform tolerances and joining them together with interlocking saddlenotch corners and tongue-and-groove walls. These techniques kept the structures air- and water-tight and maintained the straight lines of the logs. Since then, Jim Barna Log and Timber Homes has developed multiple log systems that provide innovation, integrity and ease of construction.”

HIGH COUNTRY LOG HOMES This website is a little different in that they do not list floor plans with square footage, but by looking at the pictures on the site, you can tell that they do indeed build some nice looking smaller log cabins using real logs, (big 'uns). Check out their: 'The Cottage - with sleeping loft' made using big round logs. Picture on the right is of their 'Sheridan Lake cabin', square footage unknown, but probably under 1000 SF.
“Thank you for your interest in our handcrafted log homes. High Country Log Homes has been in business since 1980, under the supervision of Bob Granberg, Owner/Builder. Our Company produces approximately fifteen to twenty high quality log packages per year at our log yard in Kamloops, British Columbia. Bob accompanies each log package to its new home site and we are always available after set up for any questions or inquiries related to your new log home. We enjoy our business and our customers. All of our homes are custom built, so we suggest having a look at one of these great log homes designers . . . Dirkson Design Services out of Nanaimo BC @ www.dirksondesign.com, Crackerjack Log Works out of Bowen Island BC @ www.crackerjacklogworks.com, and RCM Cad out of Chilliwack BC @ www.loghomedesign.ca. Please have a look at their web pages for plan ideas. The average cost for a log package is based on living space, interior log walls, corners etc. We build the package in our yard including ridge, purlins, electrical cut outs, window cut outs, door cut outs and wall slots. It takes approximately six to eight weeks to build your home in our yard depending on the size. While we build the home we send pictures of the process via e-mail so that you can see the progress. When the package is complete it is taken down, trucked and re-assembled in three to six days, ready for your contractor to finish your home. If you have any inquiries please contact us at any time.”

ESTEMERWALT LOG HOMES This looks like a classy outfit, nice website, plenty of pictures and videos of their production. This companies main headquarters is located on the East Coast in Pennsylvania. Picture on the right is not really representative of what they do, but i like the cabin in the picture so i use it here (it was borrowed from their website). The only name i could see for it is "Montoursville".
“For 127 years and through five generations, the Propst family has been manufacturing the finest in wood products and setting the standard for excellence in log homes. We are a family run log home company; we pride ourselves on having unequaled personal service, friendly staff, and precision craftsmanship. Selecting a log home is like selecting a new car. What are you looking for? Porsche 911, Chevy Pickup, Dodge Desoto — you get the point. Cost, size, style, quality, ability to deliver on time, warranties and references are some of the guidelines you should use in making your decision. There are plenty of log home manufacturers online, and most offer extensive visuals to help you understand their specialties. You'll see references to walls-only packages, structural-shell packages, complete packages, and others. The only way to get an accurate price comparison is to compare packages side-by-side. In comparing costs, keep in mind the following: Different kinds of wood, size of the logs (thickness), manner of construction, charges for plans, cost of freight (no such thing as free shipping – fuel costs money) and what is included in the package. This last item is, by far, the most important. It is very difficult to compare "apples to apples" unless you know exactly what you are getting for your money. Will you be getting just the basic shell, or will you be getting everything necessary for drying in the house. Does your basic kit or shell include the roof system, or just the rafters? Is the sub floor and interior framing included in the price? Can you buy the materials necessary for drying in the home from a local supplier for less? – probably not. See more about log home costs in the informational article: "Building Your Dream Log Home within Your Budget", or learn more about Log Home Construction Financing. To get more detailed answers to your pricing questions, request more information from Estemerwalt or contact us.”
TIMBER BLOCK I think the main selling point of this log home business is that they specialize in insulated logs used to build their cabins. "We often hear people ask us, "Why is it so important that my logs are insulated?" Well an insulated log from Timber Block achieves R30 insulation, while a traditional log (depending on its size) can be as low as R5. Current building codes can be as high as R20 making it difficult for traditional log homes to meet the 2009 building codes. Building codes in 2012 could go as high as R24 in walls." They seem to have only one floor plan under 1000 SF. Picture on the right is of their one & only 676 SF "Luberon" model located on their website in the "Classic Log Series" category.
“More than 30 years of construction history, tradition and integrity is engrained in the team at Timber Block. Timber Block's parent company was established as a family business in 1977. Success thrived on customer satisfaction, and today, customer satisfaction is still our number one goal. Timber Block's team of professionals offers a product unmatched in residential or commercial construction, which provides clients with state of the art environmentally responsible technology combined with cost-effective building methods. Delivering stock or custom products, the team at Timber Block works with you in partnership, maximizing your dream, vision and investment, to realize your home. Initially entering the log home market, Timber Block now produces more than 40% of the log homes in its core market due to both the quality and value of every log home produced. Ease of construction, which greatly reduces the time required to build each home and the energy efficiency through a superior thermal envelope, which is 'off the chart' when compared to traditional homes and especially traditional log homes, delivers exceptional long term value. Today, Timber Block's technology is being applied to commercial applications, as well as contemporary residential projects, which are both realizing all its innovative and unique array of benefits.”

However, they mention on their website that they are an authorized dealer for Lake Country Log Homes 2009 LTD, and i usually do not like to include dealers on my websites, but like to go to the source of the product, but these people's website is different offering a broader range of products than their supplier. Picture on the right is of their 'Handcrafted Luxury Cabin'.

LOK-N-LOGS As far as i can tell, this business is slightly different in that they have a proprietary system and/or product in the way that they shape the log for use in construction. No round logs used here. Looks more like a carefully cut log stacking system similar to what you might find in a kid's Log House building toy. This business does have at least two small cabin floor plans. Picture on the right is of their 16X20ft (512 SF) small cabin called the "Limekiln" one of their "Recreation Cabin" models.
“In 2011, LOK-N-LOGS celebrates 35 years as one of the world's leading manufacturers of custom precut log home packages and related items. I can't help but reflect on the many reasons for our enduring success. Through the years, we have continuously refined our manufacturing processes and construction techniques, to utilize the most state-of-the-art systems possible. Further, we have invented and perfected many new log home manufacturing technologies of our own, which is a particular source of pride for me. Among our most cherished accomplishments, however, is the continued growth of the LOK-N-LOGS family of dealers, employees and satisfied customers. The energy efficiency of a properly built log home has been documented by research such as the study done by the National Bureau of Standards. Better still, the results of this study have been verified by thousands of comfortable Lok-N-Logs homeowners. Their log homes are warm in winter and cooler in summer and their energy bills are generally less than those of their neighbors who live in conventionally constructed homes. In fact, selecting a particular customer testimonial from among the many which we receive praising the energy efficiency of Lok-N-Logs homes was a difficult task. Every Lok-N-Logs home is engineered to meet or exceed all energy codes. We have never designed a log home that has been unable to pass any of the thermal codes in your particular building area. Our greatest satisfaction, however, comes from having our customers across the country tell us about their low fuel bills or that they heat their entire homes with wood stoves. Their simple and straightforward remarks are proof positive that thermal mass works for log home owners.”

THE ADIRONDACK LEAN-TO COMPANY This company is based in Wilmington, New York. They have a very nice website and a beautiful product. I have had them listed on this website for quite awhile and they are still in business it seems. They hand craft a lovely tiny log cabin, you can see the picture of it on the right. They also make and sell a log lean-to kit which can be viewed here . . .
"A night of sleep in the wilderness, sheltered from the elements in a log lean-to, is part of an Adirondack tradition dating back to simpler times. Though they have been around for hundreds of years, they have not outlived their usefulness. If you have ever spent a day hiking over peaks in the North Country, you may know the comforting sight of a lean-to as you round the last bend at the end of a long expedition. A lean-to can be a refuge, a retreat, a shelter, a lunch spot, an inspiration point, and a home away from home. Now you can begin new traditions near a babbling brook, or perched on your mountain with a view of the landscape. In a solid handcrafted lean-to from the Adirondack Lean-to Company. The inside dimensions of our standard lean-to are 12 feet by 8 feet. This is enough room to comfortably sleep 6 people. The height from the floor to the peak is around 8 feet. Most folks buy a standard kit and then pick the roofing and extras to make their lean-to perfect for them. For more information on roof types, cost, and assembly see pricing."

ATRIUM LOG HOMES This link here takes you to Atrium's website, plus Atrium has a link to a website called: "Honka Products", which i gather they (Atrium) is a dealer for. But anyway, Atrium has a nice website with pictures of many of their products and they have a fair amount of small log cabins under 1000 SF. Picture on the right is of their tiny 100 SF (10X10) log cabin called the "The Brook". "The Brook is a simple sleeping cabin perfect for those overnight hunting or fishing trips. A deep eave over the entry protects you from the weather as you come in. The brook is also used as a small guest cabin. It can accommodate up to three adult persons." I think most or all of the logs used in their cabin kits come from "Finland".
“Whether it's a hunting, fishing or skiing cabin, or a holiday home on the lake, Atrium Log Homes has developed a cabin series with the style and design to fit your needs as well as your budget. BLUE RIDGE LOG CABINS These people have a nice website with pictures of their homes. They appear to be a pretty large business, and they have the ability to prefab large size log homes in their factory, but they also have a line of smaller cabins under 1000 SF. Picture on the right is of their 613 SF "Tryon Series" a basic model and it is described this way: "The Tryon series is the ideal getaway for couples looking to escape reality and settle into a cozy cabin nestled in the woods. The one-bedroom, one-bath design provides an intimate space with the living room and bedroom conveniently separated by a beautiful kitchen, complete with an open design and solid countertops. The simplicity of this hideaway invites couples to experience the beauty of the region, without the cumbersome and unnecessary burden of caring for a large home. The Tryon series works well as a hunting or rental cabin but also is a nice option for couples looking for a weekend getaway."
“Blue Ridge Log Cabins was incorporated in June of 1992 in response to a strong market demand for faster and more efficient construction of quality log homes. Over the years, the company has become a leader in the log home industry, creating innovative practices that reduce cost and quicken the home building process. In 2008 and 2009, Blue Ridge Log Cabins was ranked in INC Magazine’s fastest growing privately held companies in America. By constructing our homes in a factory setting, Blue Ridge Log Cabins exceeds current building standards and virtually eliminate the effects of potentially damaging weather. Additionally, by building a log home in a factory, we can produce a more uniform product with a guaranteed quality. With 90-100% of the home built in a factory, Blue Ridge Log Cabins is able to accurately project the exact cost of your home, then complete your home without involving specialized, expensive and difficult to find builders and sub-trades in the construction process . . .”

CAROLINA MOUNTAIN HOMES These folks are licensed general contractors serving the North Carolina & South Carolina areas of the nation. Picture on the right is of a completed home called the "Macberi Cabin" in Asheville, NC. I need to point out right here that their website has a lot of pictures and general information about their services, but is missing an important page which i cannot find the link to, so please click on the picture at the right to go to their "Little Log Cabins" page. They have a number of small log cabin plans available, actually about 5 different sizes of log cabins under 1000 SF. But no pictures, just pencil drawing of different elevations of their different models ranging from 300 SF up to 900 SF.
“We have a new line called "Little Log Cabins" that range from 300 SF. to 900 SF. These are cabins the way they really were. Small in stature, yet strong and authentic, construction complete with solid pine, inside and out, energy efficient with modern insulation. Our price includes everything from the masonry foundation, all materials and labor, even down to the appliances; completely move in ready. These cabins are very affordable, compact and attractive. They are reasonably priced, according to distance, quantity, and finish choices. The "Hunt Box" at 300 SF. would serve well as rental units, vacation getaways, guest quarters, etc. We offer many options that are available upon request. Take advantage of our introductory pricing as we offer an affordable alternative to the RV concept, a real cabin, site built on your property that will appreciate in value and stand the test of time. Price does not include land or water source. If your land does not have an existing water source, well drilling may be required. We do this also. The price of a well is determined by the depth. For example: A 100' punched 6" well with a submersible pump would cost approximately $3000.00. Well cost is $10-$12 per foot and well depth at 200-400 feet is the norm . . .”
YELLOWSTONE LOG HOMES This is a classy site and they do a lot of classy building, even some commercial stuff. Also, they do have at least one cabin model that is under 1000 SF, and some others that are a little over 1000 SF. Picture on the right is of their "Wasatch Model" a 670 SF lofted cabin, very nice. Looking over their material they appear to be quite professional and have many aspects to their business and products.
“The Yellowstone Log Homes family has been manufacturing log homes in Idaho since 1962. LOG HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION It may seem out of place to the viewer of this website that i would add this organization here because they discourage people from buying log cabin kits and instead have a program whereby they teach people how to build their own log home from scratch. If you are a person who has a great interest in building an authentic log home but lack the knowledge of how to do it - where are you going to go to get help? For a one time cost of a lifetime membership ($795.00) you can attend one of their classes (next class September 3rd & 4th, 2011 at Harrah's Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada) which will teach you the basics of constructing your own log cabin. Please visit their website for more complete information plus they have a lot of good information and many pictures of former clients who have built their own log cabins. Picture on the right is of a small log cabin built by a 16 year old boy/man/male.
“The Log Home Builders Association is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to help men and women around the world build their own log homes from scratch, and in many cases build without a mortgage. The Log Home Builders Association Of North America was founded in 1965 and has over 45,000 members throughout the world. We are a non-profit educational Association. We have been offering log home building classes for over 40 years. Our two-day (22 hour) log home construction class was offered through the University of Washington's Experimental College for 108 consecutive terms (over 26 years). The primary purpose of our Association is to preserve the "true-and-pure" craft of log home building — to disseminate information about log homes — to pass the craft on to future generations — and to teach people how to "build" or "buy" the best log homes for the least amount of money. All of our memberships are covered by the following money-back satisfaction guarantee: Three month "No Questions Asked" satisfaction guarantee. We are so sure that you will agree our class is one of the best things you've ever done for yourself that if you are not satisfied for any reason, even three months after you take the class, we'll give you a full refund with no questions asked. This is an iron-clad promise to you: Come and take our class. You have nothing to lose because if you aren't happy, we aren't happy. All you have to do is return your membership card and any class materials (such as the class workbook and CD), and we'll return every penny of your tuition with no questions asked.”

MERRIMAC LOG HOMES This business located in the great North East has quite a production system going according to the pictures on their website. They take the raw material and bring it to the finished product: Nice looking log cabins in all kinds of shapes and sizes. They sell everything from "Just Logs" to a complete log home shell package. Picture on the right is of their "Camp Cabin".
“Merrimac Quality Log Homes is a log home company, located in Henniker, New Hampshire. We've been producing timbers and milled logs for commercial log home companies at our own mill since the mid 1970's. Now we are making our top-quality "graded" milled logs available directly to the retail customer. Most log home dealers or log home manufacturer are just people in between you and the mill that produces the logs. That adds cost to your bottom-line that simply isn't necessary. In addition most log home kits are pre-cut. While this offers some benefits it also adds significantly to your cost and does not allow for on-site adjustments. Finally, many log home dealers try to sell you items like windows, doors, roofing and framing lumber; all items that can be purchased locally more inexpensively by you or your local log home builder. We want to show you that Merrimac Quality Log Homes is "The Right Way" to build your log home. Merrimac Quality Log Homes is privately owned and is located in the middle of Eastern White Pine Country-in central New Hampshire where we take delivery of logs from local loggers and produce high quality milled logs, timbers and lumber for use in log homes/cabins and timber frame homes. We even produce a log siding and false corner log system that when applied gives the illusion of a solid log home! Merrimac Quality Log Homes specializes in real log homes and offers an assortment of pine wood products for your building projects at mill direct prices: Milled Logs, Timbers, Lumber, finished boards, log siding, pre-cut log camp cabin kits and accessories for log cabins & homes and timber frame homes are all items we produce at our mill. Taking away the middleman reduces cost, not quality. Please take a few minutes to view our products. If there is anyway that we can help you with your decision on purchasing logs for your new log home, or any other log home building product, please call us at 1-866-637-7462 or send an email to logs@mlhnh.com. Merrimac Quality Log Homes sells log home packages mill direct . . . Saving you thousands of $$$ over standard kit home companies. To see how much we can save you, let us quote your new log home!”
LOG CABIN RESTORATION SERVICES This is an important addition to this website. Because these folks offer a service that few can provide. Note that they travel nationwide for log home repair and restoration. Click on the picture at the right to watch a video showing some of what they do.
“IWR Co. (Intensified Wood Restoration) established in 1989, is a family owned full-service log home restoration firm located along the shores of Lake Superior in Munising, Michigan. IWR operates and provides Log Home Restoration, Log Home Repairs, Finish for New Log Homes, Log Replacement , and Log Home Maintenance nationwide. We have provided restoration services to buildings that are on the National Register of Historical Places. We have been around since the log home market really started to take off. If you are considering having your cabin finished or restored please feel free to contact us either by email or over the phone to schedule an appointment. With over 29 years combined experience, in some of the harshest conditions found around the Great Lakes region, you can't go wrong with IWR’s expertise and precise craftsmanship to ensure you get the most out of your investment. IWR Co. uses environmentally friendly log home restoration techniques. We do not use harsh chemical strippers and are switching to using only environmentally friendly finishes. These chemicals can be very harmful or toxic to humans and our environment. Our Log Home Restoration process involves four steps: Preparation, preservation, staining, and sealing. We have developed a process that will achieve the best results for your log home. Mike Denman, owner of IWR Company fine tuned the procedures used over the past 20 years and developed his own unique system called the "Ozzy". The ozzy helps to hand sand your log home to produce a smooth log finish and remove existing log home stain. By not using chemical strippers or media blasting (this should only be used as a last option, please read below) the longevity of your logs will be more secure. Ozzying leaves the surface of your logs smooth to the touch and is easier to clean up compared to media blasting or chemical stripping . . .”

JALOPY CABINS
This is really a great find. These people specialize in using "Real Logs" not fake ones to build these very cute small Log Cabins for sale to the general public suitable for living in. Nice website with lots of pictures. The Picture on the right is of their "The Ski Hut" a 10x16ft cabin which is currently for sale.
“Jalopy Cabins was an idea that quickly became a reality. For us, combining the idea of building small, efficient housing and using reclaimed materials went hand in hand with our goal of being environmentally friendly and providing unique, one of a kind homes. Small or tiny homes are very practical and more people are starting to realize all the benefits that come with living in a smaller space. If you're not looking to live in a smaller space, a Jalopy Cabin could serve many other potential uses for you. They make great guest cabins, home offices, art studios and tack/feed rooms. Jalopy Cabins is taking a very different approach to building small housing. Our cabins our formed from a creative vision by our builder and then assembled with the reclaimed materials that are available. Each cabin will be built using a minimum of 90% reclaimed materials and is truly a one of a kind structure. It is for this reason we do not provide catalogs or general floor plans for you to choose from. Having lived in small spaces for his entire life, builder Wolf Brooks is fully aware of the best ways to maximize space in small areas. He has also been building homes for the past 13 years and wants to provide you a cabin with the best craftsmanship. We will only be producing a minimal quantity of cabins each year allowing adequate time to acquire our reclaimed materials and give each cabin its own unique characteristics.”

BUILDING A LOG CABIN IN FAIRBANKS, ALASKA This video is quite nice and shows the steps taken to build this small home in Alaska. It has been produced by a small family owned cabin rental, construction and property management business in Alaska.
“A short slideshow/video of a log cabin going up in Goldstream Valley, outside Fairbanks Alaska. This cabin was built by noted log builder Gary Hinzman, with help from Doug Schneider, Phil Streeter, John Hanna, and Austin Hinzman. We use a variety of logs, but most of them are milled green. Some logs come from fire killed forests, or harvested in the winter, and are therefore somewhat drier. Some cabins are made from logs that have sat for a year or two before being milled. There's one mill near Fairbanks that has a kiln and dries their logs by burning scrap wood for heat. But we treat all our logs as green when cutting splines and calculating settling. Hope this helps. Thanks for your interest.” ~doug

Some of these log builder businesses have their own special way of doing things and this is one of those companies. They will only use one type of tree to build their cabins, while some companies use different types of trees. Video on the right contains general information about their business.
“Welcome: To the beginning of a wonderful log home experience. You are considering a family-owned business whose unique log homes stand as testimonial to our outstanding history of success. “Whatever the log styles or log types, American Log Homes painstakingly dries its logs to 15 percent or less moisture content. "You don't have to worry about or allow for the shrinking, settling, or twisting you sometimes get with improperly dried logs," says Clyde. "Our logs are guaranteed." That quality commitment extends to how American Log Homes treats its customers. "We explain everything in minute detail," says Clyde. "We stay with them throughout the process." Adds Jeff Cremer, Clyde's son and company vice president, "We even get questions from people we sold to back in 1982, about how to care for their homes, and we'll help them out and do whatever it takes, also providing the best log home maintenance products for the job".”
“It is possible to achieve the dream of log-cabin living even when lifestyle needs or budget don't embrace the possibility of a full-scale residence. Mini log cabins capture all the charm of a classic log home on a modest scale ranging from just 80 square feet to a cozy 320 square feet. Ideal as weekend retreats, hunting cabins, commercial campground resort cabins, or even backyard playhouses, workrooms, or storage sheds, they can be built on concrete slabs, piers, or even wooden skids, on any flat spot you can find. Compact though they are, mini cabins can accommodate as much as a bedroom, bath, kitchen, dining nook, and porch in the 14-by-20-foot size; and you can even expand the living space without adding to the footprint by including a loft. They are designed utilizing a special 4" x 6" single tongue and groove log. They can be built on a concrete slab, piers even wooden skids. They can go on just about any flat spot you can find. We supply the kit and all of the hardware you need to assemble the kit.”

FINGER LAKES LOG HOMES This appears to be a kinda small business but that might be good for the consumer or buyer of his log homes. Not a lot of material on the website here, but just enough to give you an idea of what they can do, which is quite a lot. They have some nice examples of their finished homes on display here. If so desired, i am sure they can build you a cabin with less than 1000 SF floor space.
“The idea that eventually became Finger Lakes Log Homes started 25 years ago. Owner Michael Griffin had already built his own log home the hard way. He cut his own pine trees down, hauled them out of the woods and trucked them to his building site. The logs were then draw-knifed and were put up by hand without any machinery other than a chainsaw. They were left round which required them to be chinked in the old-style way. Chinking was a very long and tedious job that never seemed to end. After living in this home for a while, Mike saw the popularity of log homes increase dramatically. People were now building them from packages or kits supplying logs that were machined so they went up much faster, looked better and didn't require the tedious chinking. Since Mike Griffin had experience with construction in general and liked the beauty and charm of log homes, he decided to enter into the log home business. Several companies were now machining their logs, and Mike found that the best quality logs were tongue & grooved. This allowed the houses to go up much more easily and provided a good seal between the logs without the time-consuming chinking that Mike had done with his own home. The easiest way to enter the business was to become a dealer for one of the many companies that were selling log home kits. Mike traveled to visit many companies, trying to decide who provided the best quality and pricing and would be a reliable company to deal with. He had almost become a dealer for a particular company until he discovered (through other dealers) that the company could take away his dealership if he didn't meet a sales quota. Was the risk worth it? No. Mike also felt that the prices many companies charged for their packages were quite high and their service was often poor - especially if the log home company was located in another state. After much deliberation, Mike felt that by starting a small company and keeping all costs and overhead to a minimum, he could produce a high-quality package as good as or better than the other companies and at a much lower cost than the other companies. He then proceeded to purchase the necessary machinery, built buildings and designed some affordable home packages. With much hard work he had started his own log home manufacturing company. What he didn't do was to build a fancy model home, print color brochures or hire salesmen and a lot of staff. The new company was named Finger Lakes Log Homes Inc after the Finger Lakes area of New York State that Mike grew up in . . .”

RANCH CREEK LTD This is a little bit different operation here than most log cabin kit providers. They specialize in the use of one particular type of tree which has been affected by the Colorado Pine beetle infestation. They use this tree for different products like wood furniture and firewood, but also for making log cabin kits. They can sell log cabin kits for as low as $15 a square foot, i mean this appears to be a quality product, as the infested logs are not made unsuitable for use in building log homes.
“Our mission is to provide quality products and services at an affordable price, while making use of timber salvaged from the Colorado Pine Beetle epidemic. We provide products with excellent quality and durability, and we are committed to customer satisfaction. Ranch Creek Ltd is located in the North West Rocky Mountains of Colorado in a town called Granby. Ranch Creek Ltd is devoted to finding uses for the timber in this area that has been hit by the Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic. This timber is still of great value and will be for several years to come, but if it is not used it will eventually go to waste. By buying Ranch Creek products, such as our Colorado log cabin packages, you are helping to make use of this wood and helping to make way for new growth timber. At Ranch Creek Limited, we are dedicated to providing the best Lodgepole Pine products available. All of our Colorado log cabin packages and other products are made from blue stained Lodgepole Pine. Our quality products include custom house railings, fencing and other agricultural products, and firewood. As a recent addition, a house log machine is in service to produce log home kits. There is no better way to build green than to build with pine beetle wood. Beetle-killed Lodgepole Pine contains a blue stain from a fungus left behind by the pine beetle. It does not affect the integrity of the wood or the products made from it. It simply has a blue stain throughout it that people find to be very appealing. By using blue stain wood, you use timber that will otherwise go to waste. Call us for a free quote today for a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) log cabin. Ranch Creek Ltd. offers log cabin kits and home packages starting at $15.00 per square foot, for all outside walls and connection materials. We will work with you to create just what you want at a very affordable price. We can start with one of our log cabin plans or you can customize your own log home plan to work with. We can ship log cabin kits to other states, whether it's California, Alaska, Kansas, Texas, Alabama, or Vermont. Come visit us in our new model Log Home/Office. The log home packages are a solution to affordable, green home building in this weak economy. You can still afford to build a beautiful, warm, cozy, new log home with one of our log home packages.”

SATTERWHITE LOG HOMES Satterwhite logs are cut from dead standing Engelmann Spruce found high in the Rocky Mountains (usually Colorado & Utah). The trees are located at about 10,000 FT elevation, and have been dead for over 40 years. This company has a line of smaller log cabin kits under 1000 SF called "Salado". They have four to five different versions of the "Salado". Picture on the right is of the 588 SF Salado Log Cabin. They have better pictures on their website, but they are pictures of cabins with much larger square footage.
“Satterwhite Logs are manufactured from Engelmann Spruce trees found high in the Rocky Mountains of the American West, principally Colorado and Utah. Most Satterwhite homes use Western Red Cedar, conventionally cut and dried, for exterior trim, gable ends, and porches. Satterwhite Logs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Most people choose our popular D-shaped logs because they allow a traditional log appearance on the outside while yielding a flat interior wall. Flat interior wall surfaces preserve the rich look of real wood and make installation of electrical switches and outlets uncomplicated, while eliminating "dust catchers". Of course, Satterwhite offers a variety of other log designs which allow a wide range of customization. Some people prefer the rustic log look on interior as well as exterior walls, so Satterwhite offers a full round log with curved surfaces on both interior and exterior walls. Other materials include thinner logs designed for interior partition walls. These partition logs match the inside look of D-shaped house logs, but are flat on both sides for exposure to both rooms on either side of the wall. One of our newer log styles is a square rough-cut log designed to accept chinking and yielding a hand-hewn log home appearance. For ultimate flexibility, Satterwhite can custom mill logs to your specifications. Beveled exteriors, single tongue-and-grooves, triple tongue-and-grooves, rustic unmilled exteriors, and many other options are available. We even offer saddle-notched full round logs with coped bottoms.”

REAL LOG HOMES This company does have mostly standard size home plans, but they do have a section for smaller cabins which i like close to or under 1000 SF. Picture on the right is of their tiny 432 SF Liberty model, part of their REAL LOG CABINS series: "The Real™ Log Cabins series of plans from Real Log Homes® provides a great system to get the warmth and appeal of a log home in a smaller more compact package. These log cabins are quick and easy to construct and are great solutions for hunting cabins, guest homes, camp site homes, lake getaways or ski retreats."

EDMUNDS & COMPANY LOG HOME RESTORATIONS This website is loaded with pictures of their workmanship or repair jobs completed, with before and after pictures. There does not seem to be very many of these type companies around, but they travel all over, so if you have the cash, they have the time and equipment.
“Restoring log homes is our business . . . Our ONLY business. Thank you for your interest in our log home repair services. We are located in Northern Wisconsin and we specialize in solving all sorts of problems with log homes and log cabins. Take a look at our photo album to see some of our work. Let us tell you a little bit about our company, which specializes in the restoration and preservation of log structures of all kinds: Cabins, homes, boat houses, historic buildings, saunas, etc. Our company was born out of necessity in 1978, when the Edmunds family bought a log home in northern Wisconsin. Our immediate problem was that we could not find anyone, at that time, with any experience at restoring log cabins that could help us or give us advice. So, we did the work ourselves. Soon, other log cabin owners were asking us about their buildings and now, over 30 years later, restoring log buildings is our only business and we employ two full time crews. While our primary territory is Northern Wisconsin and Northern Minnesota, we will work anywhere in the United States. We have done log restoration and repair jobs all over the nation - from Vermont to the Arizona and from the Northwest angle of Minnesota (300 yards from Canada) to Southern Florida. We will go anywhere a log home or cabin needs repair or restoration. We make special arrangements on these types of jobs. Many times, we review the project or given issue with the homeowner by use of digital photos or a video. This reduces the initial bidding cost of these long distance projects.”
TE HUIA LOG HOMES
These log homes are not your mama's typical log home. The purveyor has only about 2 or 3 floor models and they are very attractive. I guess he ships anywhere around the world because he mentions using a "shipping container" to transport the prefab home to your site. This business is based in New Zealand.
"Natural by design, the Te Huia Twin Peaks range of natural log homes is a classic 'form follows function' expression of our desire to live within the environment rather than on top of it. A fusion of traditional log building and modern engineering experience, Twin Peaks is a fresh approach to the use of 'whole' hand crafted natural log building. It is simple, contemporary, eco friendly and a tech-smart home which draws architectural inspiration from the Pacific Islands and Asian cultures. The Te Huia Twin Peaks log home can be built with several internal room variations and build options. The ready made log structure is delivered in a shipping container for quick easy re-build on site which any good conventional builder finishes as per easily understood standard building plans."

“Wisconsin Log Homes believes that Dream Experiences are just as important as Dream Homes. Anyone can offer a materials package, but the quality of those materials and the type of service you'll receive before, during, and after your home is built is what really matters and sets us apart from the rest. Our customers tell us that it's more than the quality of our homes and services that make Wisconsin Log Homes the best choice; it's the talented, dedicated and caring people they are surrounded with during their entire project that really creates the ultimate experience. Our team's openness, honesty, knowledge, ingenuity, and our passion to make a difference while nurturing your ideas is what allows us to build outstanding relationships and homes so you can realize your dreams. Since hand-scribing our first log home in 1976, Wisconsin Log Homes has evolved to become one of the world's leading designers, manufacturers and builders of the most elite, elegant, and energy-efficient custom log and timber homes. While "green" and "hybrid" are the newest catch words in the industry, they precisely represent the Thermal-Log™ Building System that we pioneered over 30 years ago. Our Thermal-Log™ System blends the wisdom of modern day construction with the craftsmanship and beauty of log and timber homes, achieving up to R-45+ value, which translates into energy savings, no log-wall settling or air infiltration, less maintenance and more comfort. With our hybrid building system, you'll enjoy a custom design that reflects your style, your setting, and your budget. The sky is the limit with our custom design approach and unique product selection - log, timber, cedar, stone, and any other natural building materials of your choice. "Montana Timber Structures supplies precut notched logs for log homes and log cabins. Since 1989 this family run log/home/log cabin manufacturer has created quality custom log and timber structures, log trusses and log accents for architects, builders and home owners. To accomplish this goal we developed quality precision machinery capable of close tolerances. Our uniquely designed mill can produce lathe turned logs up to 32' in length and 32" in diameter while maintaining a 1/16" tolerance! The payoff is a vastly superior log and a quality over quantity mentality. In addition to an advanced product we also made the promise to keep the relationship with our customers on a personal level and treat all projects with the care they deserve, regardless of size. It is this attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction that has given us the reputation as the best in our business."

WHOLESALE LOG HOMES
They specialize in producing pre-cut and slotted or grooved logs for building your own log cabin. Looks like a good idea to me.
“Here at Wholesale Log Homes, we sell high quality milled heartwood logs, timbers, finished boards, log siding and log cabin home accessories for log home construction. We sell wholesale, enabling you to save money when you buy directly from us. We do not sacrifice quality for price. We simply eliminate the inflated retail log home company markups. We sell logs and log siding for any log home kits, or log home package. We provide premium logs for log homes and log cabin construction. We strongly advise against buying everything for your log home in a pre-organized package. Shop around, the way you do for everything else you buy for yourself. All-inclusive log home plans, log cabin kits or log cabin home packages may seem convenient, but in the long run they are overpriced and inflexible. At Wholesale Log Homes, you'll get the log cabin home you want, the quality you want, and the best log cabin kit prices in the industry. When you buy from us, you design your log home, and we supply the wholesale logs, timbers, and other specialty items that can't be purchased locally. All non-specialty building supplies, such as doors and windows, can be purchased from a local building products dealer. By buying logs from us and by purchasing other products locally, you save thousands of dollars in delivery and markup costs. Best of all you will have exactly the quality and brands that you want in your log cabins. Not only will your new home meet your budget, but it will meet your specifications as well.”

CONESTOGA LOG CABINS & HOMES This business has a good selection of cabins under 1000 SF. Lots of nice product pictures. Picture on the right is of their 14.7ft x 21ft "Outdoorsman" model (Note: I changed my mind, put video up instead). This appears to be a really large company with state of the art production equipment. What i like about this company is that they specialize in smaller log cabins.
“The idea for Conestoga Log Cabins and Homes was developed over twenty years ago when we decided to be one of the best log home companies in the industry. In 1983, after over ten years of various designs and several generations of machinery, we produced our first log cabin kit for the campground industry under the name Conestoga Log Cabins. The initial concepts and processes from those early years have evolved into a streamlined 100,000 square foot state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. In addition to quality log cabins, Conestoga's product line has grown to include bathhouses, multi-purpose structures, log cabin homes and a line of furniture to complement our log structures. Since our inception, Conestoga Log Cabins has proven to be the leader in the resort log cabins kits industry with cabins in Europe, Asia, the Bahamas, and across all of North America, including Alaska and Greenland. Conestoga's greatest desire is to provide satisfaction with all of our log cabins, multi-purpose structures and log cabin homes. Our belief is that every structure should have the quality characteristics Conestoga individuals desire in the things we purchase. Making cabins that ensure customer satisfaction and instill value is our benchmark. It is this uncompromised approach that allows us to title what we do The Conestoga Difference.”

A $100 LOG CABIN
This is another one of those great Mother Earth News articles from long ago. You can hardly buy a pizza (3-4 pizzas?) nowadays for a $100!
“An Oregon couple combined love of the land, a wealth of native materials, traditional hand tools, and lots of hard work to build . . .
Living in a cozy little cabin nestled in the woods is part and parcel of the classic Thoreau-inspired lifestyle most folks dream of now and then. But, the romantic vision of log-home life is shattered for many people by the sheer cost of such structures, which can be as high as that of equivalent conventional homes. That doesn't have to be the case, however. My wife and I kept down the cash outlay for our "Walden" by gathering most of the materials from the land where our house was to stand, and then building the cabin ourselves, using only hand tools. As a result, our small home cost us only about $100 to construct . . . And the project was so simple that we're convinced anyone with access to a few basic implements and a good supply of timber could do the same thing.”

If you want to locate one of their dealers just contact them and they will probably refer you to one. Picture on the right is of their 684 SF "Willow Creek" model.

ELECTRICAL FIRES & THEIR CAUSES This book has been entrusted to me by the author to sell on the internet. This is a paperback book which contains 99 pages, but has a lot of accurate information concerning the source of electrical fires. The book is written in layman's language and is easily understood by most everyone. This subject matter is appropriate for most any man made structure which includes conventional wood homes, shipping container homes, sheds and other out-buildings with conventional electrical systems (electrical wire & circuit breaker panels) installed within their framing members.
“This is a book written by Rudy A. Medina former fire chief of Imperial county of California for use by those working in the fire investigation field, attorneys, fire service, firefighters, electricians, electrical contractors, insurance adjusters, criminal fire investigators, & fire prevention personnel. It is an informative book for the professional who needs to know fire causes and the behavior of electrical energy. BUILDING A LOG CABIN IN FAIRBANKS, ALASKA This is a little different listing here in that it features using log cabins as long term rental units. No log cabins for sale here, just rental units. But the video on the right gives you a little view into the building of a log cabin, also, these are small log cabins, the kind i like. Anyway, this looks like a neat little business idea assuming you can find good renters. "Goldstream Cabins is a licensed and insured family small business that owns and operates rental cabins for university students and residents in Fairbanks, Alaska. We are dedicated to providing excellent housing at affordable rates. Our cabins are located in Goldstream Valley, close to the University of Alaska Fairbanks."
“Goldstream Cabins is a family-owned small business started in 2000 that rents well-built, clean cabins that feature hot/cold running water to a large kitchen sink, offering renters a taste of rustic Alaska living without the mess and inconvenience of 'dry' cabins. The cabin floor, roof, and gable walls are insulated with sprayed-in closed-cell soy/urethane foam, which translates to reduced drafts, warmer floors, and lower heating bills. Other amenities are detailed under the individual cabin description pages. Goldstream Cabins are well-maintained in quiet neighborhoods close to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and adjacent to bike, ski and dog trails. Three cabins are currently offered on a long-term basis. We do not offer cabins on a daily or weekly basis. Construction of a fourth cabin is scheduled to begin in summer 2011. Please check back for updates, or send an email to goldstreamcabins@yahoo.com to be contacted when a cabin becomes available. Thank you for thinking of us!”
PRECISION CRAFT LOG & TIMBER HOMES This log home business as far as i can tell does not have floor plans under 1000 SF, but rather use the 1000 to 2000 SF as the smallest range. ALASKA CABINS
Here's a unique log home building system for your consideration. Great for either a man or a woman.
“Have you been wondering about building your own cabin but are not sure you are ready to undertake a long hard task? Here is a simple method using only 6 foot logs that almost anyone can handle once they are dry. There are many advantages of our construction methods over conventional log construction. The log cabin goes up fast. You don't have to make any fancy cuts or notches. Scribe fit methods take a lot of time even for skilled workers. With this method, all the cuts are square cuts easily accomplished with a chain saw. The short logs also allow for faster construction because no heavy equipment is needed for lifting. One man or woman can move these logs around on their own. If the logs are allowed to dry the weight of each log is significantly reduced. If weight is very important, smaller logs can be used. Since you only need logs that are six feet long, a well treed one acre lot can easily provide enough material to build your walls. The cabin above was built from the logs found on the one acre site. It is not necessary to find a stand of straight, tall timber. Logs of different sizes and even different shapes can be used. It is even possible to fit crooked logs together with this method without a lot of hassle. Because of the use of on site materials, it is possible in many parts of the country to build this 24X24 cabin for as little as $1,500. That of course means that one must think "low cost" throughout the project. The other costly items are your foundation, floor and roof. If those costs are kept under control, a $1,500 cabin is possible. That would not include any extras of course. The cabin pictured and others like it are being built in Alaska. Our materials costs are significantly higher here. This cabin has a metal roof, heated concrete floor, plumbing, electrical wiring, tongue and groove pine ceiling and a kitchen and bathroom. It cost about $15,000 to build. We can almost say no settling but because different tree species shrink at different rates and different ways we cannot guarantee no settling. However, compared to conventional log construction, the settling is minimal. For most log species, you don't have to even worry about it or allow for settling in the construction. While a normal log cabin will settle several inches during the first few years, this one hardly settles at all. That is because the logs do not shrink along their length but most of the shrinkage is in their width. If you stack a bunch of logs up horizontally as in traditional log building, the accumulated shrinkage of each log on top of each other results in the whole wall settling 1-4 inches depending on the amount of moisture in the logs to begin with. We use spruce logs and can put them up green and still not worry about settling. If we put them up green they do shrink in their width but that does not make the walls settle down. The shrinkage is easily taken up by chinking. Our handbook explains this method and goes into detail on how to handle and join the logs and install windows and doors. We give detailed instructions from the foundation through the roof. We have discontinued publishing of the hard copy (it was $15) but still publish the e-book. For only $8.00 you can order the e-book (It's the same thing, but it saves us postage and time). You can just click on the paypal button here. We will send you the link and the password for you to open up the digital handbook. You will be able to save it on your computer or print it out. This is copyrighted so you do not have permission to sell your copies.”

FRONTIER LOG HOMES They do have available at least one cabin kit floor plan at 699 SF. It's called the "Vacationer". Of course they also offer custom alterations and bigger cabins.
“Locally owned and operated, Frontier Log Homes has been in business in Western Colorado since 1977. Our log packages are constructed at our Montrose, Colorado facility by skilled craftsmen. We use full round logs that are hand peeled using drawknives. Round notches are scribed and cut by hand using a hammer, chisel and chainsaw, making our homes fully hand crafted. We also offer: Hand-hewn logs, Dovetail notches, Log roof systems integrated into conventional constructed walls, Log componentry of all kinds using full, round, hand peeled logs. Your custom log kit is built using the floor plans that you and our drafting department have finalized. The logs are hand peeled, notched, and scribed. The kit is then built in our log yard. Each log is numbered and the built kit is then taken down and loaded on semi trailers and delivered to your building site. The log kit includes the exterior and interior log walls, log floor joists, and supporting roof logs. Windows and the roof are not included in the log kit. The average cost of log kit packages is $40.00 per square foot. Shipping, building erection, and General Contracting services are separate additional costs.”

CABIN KIT HOMES This appears to be a pretty good website and it offers a lot of information about pre-fab cabins which they sell and have a delivery system in place from British Columbia Canada. US headquarters in Greer, Arizona. And they sell cabin kits with smaller size cabins than the one pictured.
“We’re a unique team of individuals and building professionals with over 60 years of design, construction and development experience with diverse projects in many areas. Some of the company’s past projects have included entire subdivisions... like Mili Mikani, a resort development of 65 unique garden and vacation homes at the Princeville, a golf resort on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. These garden and vacation homes offered unique designs with building materials supplied and shipped from the North America mainland as complete exterior shell packages. These were the first "Cabin Kits", says Wardner. The savings were extraordinary and each customer had the chance to customize and decorate their home as they wished. Being right can be a lonely business. And while most builders and developers resist change and are slow to adopt new systems and technologies, Cabin Kit Homes takes pride in being on the cutting edge with innovative new programs and services. "Our web site is intended to be a resource of useful information," says Wardner. We enjoy a highly visible presence on the internet, and use the technology to serve our customers and to expand our client base.”
